'DESIGNING THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE'
MASTER THESIS - DESIGNING THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE
EMPOWERING RELATIVES WITH 'MY RELATIVE APP'
ABOUT
This thesis explores how to develop a design solution, which includes and informs relatives about the course of a total knee replacement at a Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Furthermore, it is explored how a solution may contribute to an improvement in the collaboration and communication between relatives and hospital staff. This project is conducted in cooperation with Nyt Hospital Nordsjælland and the fieldwork is carried out at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Nordsjællands Hospital, Hillerød.
METHODS
To explore this problem from a service design perspective, different stakeholders were involved in the design process.
-
Observations were carried out at the Department of Orthopedics during patient seminars.
-
Semi-structured interviews were conducted; three with former knee and hip replacement patients and two with relatives of the knee and hip replacement patients.
-
A workshop with case partners from Nyt Hospital Nordsjælland and representatives from the consultancy company, Emento, were carried out to get professional feedback.
-
A workshop with nurses at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery was conducted, to acquire a medical specialist perspective on the content of a prototype of a design solution.

RESULTS
-
Based on the analysis a prototype of an app targeted relatives is designed.
-
The app is to be provided by the staff at the Department of Orthopedics and is targeted relatives to patients, who are having knee replacement surgery. The contents of the app include different tasks pushed at a specific time, information videos with hospital staff, and a message-system between hospital staff and relatives.
-
The purpose of the app is to provide relatives with relevant information and by giving an overview of the course of treatment the collaboration between relatives and hospital staff can be improved. By using the app relatives may reflect on their role and to a greater extent prepare for challenges that may occur during treatment. To support the onboarding process, a revised version of the invitation letter for patients is developed.
-
Besides, challenges about a successful implementation of the app are explored.
-
Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of further exploring, how to include relatives as active participants in the course of treatment.
